Established in this location in 1929, the New York Deli is one of Richmonds oldest restaurants. In that time the New York Deli has become a tradition, a landmark and a gathering place for locals. From the invention of the Sailor Sandwich (Pastrami & swiss on thick sliced, locally baked rye topped with a knockwurst) in the mid 40's to the creation of the Carytown New Years Eve in 2007 the New york Deli has carried a long tradition of evolution and community involvement. We look forward to carrying on this tradition for another 80 years.
In 2006, after 77 years in this location, the restaurant was remodeled and Richmonds oldest restaurant was reborn as Richmonds first full service deli concept specializing in a full spectrum of deli sandwiches. Although we still offer our top quality meats & cheeses by the pound (yes we still have the Liptauer!) as well as our ever popular and convient sandwich trays, we are no longer the traditional deli that your parents grew up with. We are something more.
In the spirit of our namesake, one of the greatest and most progressive cities in the world, we have brought the New York Deli to the forefront of American full service casual dining. Our extensive menu offers a stunning variety of sandwiches, salads, breakfast, and entrees. Featuring over fifty sandwiches, subs, wraps & burgers as well as the ability to build your own sandwiches using any of our many top quality deli meats, cheeses & our fresh, locally baked breads our menu is certain to have something for everyone, including our vegetarian friends!
We are Richmonds oldest restaurant and Carytown's original gathering spot. We are the birthplace of the Sailor and the creators of the Carytown New Years Eve party. We are independent and strive to actively support our community, local business, fasion, and the arts. We are the New York Deli and whether you have been coming for 50 years or coming for your first visit, we are excited to welcome and serve you!!
It's the return of the sandich; it's the return of The Deli.

I recently had a great experience at New York Deli. I usually go there in the evenings for cocktails with friends, however I had breakfast there a couple Saturdays ago. I had no idea they were open so early every day and that they served breakfast. The food was delicious! I was extremely impressed. My family was visiting me from out of town and we couldn't make up our minds where to go out for breakfast. I had heard from a friend that New York Deli served breakfast every day. We all had a very enjoyable experience. I highly recommend New York Deli!

The only reason I can give for going here is the fact that it's two blocks from my house. The food is average, nothing to write home about. The service is terrible. Good luck getting the staff to make eye contact with you. I've put in several drink orders only to be forgotten. I've on more than one occasion had to hunt my server down for the check. I can't even get angry anymore. It's so ridiculous it borders on humorous. I keep hoping they'll get it together someday, but I'm about to give up. The only positive I can really give is that they have a decent breakfast menu. Also the morning staff is more on top of things.

The New York Deli re-opened a year ago...It has a beautiful new look and that is the least of its improvements. Although I used to stop in years ago it was nothing like it is today. HUGE IMPROVEMENT!!! The menu is what a modern menu should be, lots of variety of all of my favorite deli sandwiches (BEST REUBEN EVER) as well as new interesting and less traditional choices. This menu is so diverse that every one I go their with always finds something, even vegetarians!! On suggestion from a friend I tried a burger, not something I would normally get from a restaurant as I like them home made, and boy was it good. (I've had them twice since including one with an egg on it, awesome!!) Truly a great experience, friendly staff, beautiful environment, and great sandwiches, salads and entree's. They even serve breakfast. It is really fun at night too. They have DJ's spinning almost every night (Something different from a Fan Bar...WHAT!!!!) and have a really cool and diverse crowd. This place is truly the total package.

My trip to New York Deli was a huge letdown. I ordered a Reuben and it was not only the fattiest corned beef I've ever had, it was extremely tough and hard to chew. My friend ordered the Baked Chicken Breast which, for $14, was not worth the price. The 1/4 chicken was miniscule and the saffron sauce that came with it was used so sparingly, it was basically drizzled.

Last time I was there, I ordered the Reuben. What I got was a thin piece of corned beef, a pinch of sauerkraut, and a drizzle of 1000 Island. Quite possibly the thinnest reuben ever.
